Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass (Wain, 2026)

Out of nowhere, Zoey Deutch has come out of hiding and provided the world with two impeccable comedies. Just recently released on Netflix, Voicemails to Isabelle was a surprise. Now, after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January this year, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is her next hit! With an amazing cast and crew in the creation of this film, no one can deny that Deutch’s panache and character qualities bring the story to life in more ways than one. A crazy tale that takes audiences to places they would have never expected, Gail Daughtryis a spunky, comedy with so many elements of thriller and action. A genre mash that works.

Since High School, Gail Daughtry (Deutch) has been in a terribly devoted relationship with sweetheart, Tom (Michael Cassidy). Now, small town hairdresser, her life path all of a sudden changes when a book signing sends her boyfriend straight into the arms of his ‘celebrity pass’. Stumbling in upon them, Gail begins to understand that this idea is not an imaginary idea, but a possibility if it were ever to come to it. Needing space, Gail impulsively joins her colleague and friend Otto (Miles Gutierrez-Riley) on his trip to Los Angeles. There, he convinces her that the only way to move on from what Tom did is to have her turn with her ‘celebrity pass’.

Writer-director David Wain thought of the silliest relationship qualm and turned it into what could possibly be one of the funniest romantic comedies I have seen in quite some time. Stories, even told by the owner of them, are never fully what came to pass. And in Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, friendly neighbourhood postman takes the audience through the story with his narration of the town, its citizens, and especially Gail’s adventure. The town in this film is filled with many stories, but the most intriguing one we could to this date be told, is the one that is of “Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass”. Notably introduced, and the title full on stated. Pure wit, what could have not worked, worked perfectly.

As we follow Gail to Los Angeles, along with Otto, she meets a psychic. The words she speaks convince Gail that in order to save her engagement to Tom she must ‘even the scales’. What becomes even better is who Gail’s ‘celebrity pass’ is. Jon Hamm. Prepared to do what must be done, Gail and Otto venture through Tinseltown with one mission. Yet, things prove harder than expected and the duo find themselves meeting more people and gaining more friends than ever before. Joining forces with talent agency assistant, Caleb (Ben Wang), paparazzo Vincent (Ken Marino), and even the legendary actor John Slattery himself, the gang might be headed down a wild goose chase.

That is precisely what makes the film such fun! Just as little as the characters know about what is going on, or what is going to happen, as a viewer you know even less. I mean, there are moments that you feel you could predict what will happen. For example, Gail choosing to go her own way instead of staying with Tom after his ‘celebrity sex pass’. A shocking moment in which a normal romantic comedy, you could most likely see the girl stay with the guy somehow. But with Gail Daughtry we should all expect the unexpected. Enjoy the pleasurable moments, and sit back and wonder what could possibly happen next.

No matter who shows up — from Jennifer Aniston, Elizabeth Banks, to ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic — no one does it better than miss Zoey Deutch herself. Like previously discussed, she has found herself having quite the year. Even with her voice role in Minions & Monsters showing up out of the blue. But giving her the shot of titular role Gail Daughtry was the best decision. Gail is given the chance to allow Deutch to portray every emotion in the book. A young woman who has had the same partner since High School looses almost everything in such a short period of time. Not only is the film a romance, a comedy, but it can also hold life lessons for young girls everywhere within. Fun can be had, emotions can be seen, but the power within the stance and the carrying of Gail across the screen gives Deutch so much power with the audience.

Real life Hollywood superstars, a cast of vivacious characters, a powerful lead, and yet the plot continues to thicken. Just when you think it can be as simple as a rag tag gang helping one with their quest for Jon Hamm, something else happens. Collision with a group of assassins was never on their bucket list. But, it happened, and they have to deal with it. Seems as though the universe does not want Gail to get to her ‘celebrity pass’, but she has things to say about it. A fun journey, more so for the audience, than for Gail herself. What with all the chaos that ensues. But in the end, it is probably the friends she made along the way that were the most important of results.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is one of the freshest and silliest romantic comedy adventure films that there has been in awhile. With a superb lead, stellar support from her peers, and a story that keeps audiences wanting to know more, there is something in it for everyone. After its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival back in January of this year, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is finally heading to wider cinemas across North America. And hopefully, some day soon, it will spread internationally to give everyone the chance to laugh and enjoy this silly adventure.
